WHat is film Distribution?
Film distribution is the commercial process that makes a feature film available to the general public. It usually also includes determining a marketing strategy. Learning the art of obtaining distribution is key for any film or TV producer.⠀
What is A Film Distributor?
Film distributors handle the release of a film. In other words, film distribution companies control most marketing for a movie and the distribution to either specific territories or global rights. Distribution deals agreements can be specific enough to cover only Video on Demand (VOD) or theatrical release in a single territory.
They take the final project and unleash it on the masses – knocking down doors, partnering with movie theater chains, and developing marketing materials. Independent producers are not usually involved in the distribution of films. Distribution is still the domain of the Hollywood-based major studios that generate more than 90% of the US box office. Still, there are also smaller distributors and independent sales agents who handle independent productions. There are also nonprofit organizations that can lend a hand in various ways.
